Before listing you items, choose an appropriate category for your item.
This will help your buyer find your item easily.
You can consider listing your item to two categories.
For example an old Vase that can categorize under Antique and Home & Garden.
Search for items on eBay that are similar to yours and notice which categories they are listed in. Try several different keyword searches and see if you find particularly active categories.
Look at the page-view counters and numbers of bids on similar items in several different categories. Choose to join categories where others are having successful listings.
Currently ebay has 21 categories to choose from.
The categories are: Antiques, Automotive, Books, Cameras & Photo,Clothing, Shoes & Accessories, Coins, Collectables, Computers & Networking, Consumer Electronics,
Dolls & Bears, Entertainment, Health & Beauty,Home & Garden, Jewellery & Watches,
Mobile & Home Phones, Pets and Pet Supplies, Real Estate, Sports,Stamps, Toys & Hobbies, and Everything Else.
There are sub-categories under the categories above to be more specific with your listings.
